Colouring Curly hair by duplicating the natural spirals shapes and patterns of seashells
Who doesn't love collecting seashells at the beach? They're a great souvenir of
fun and relaxing memories of holidays at the beach. They evoke the sounds and smells
of the ocean, and each one is unique and beautiful in its own way.
Realizing that curly hair is also unique in its own way, I formulated my Curly Hair
Solutions line of products and created cutting techniques that make the most of
curls, giving them shape and control. Now my approach to hair colour enhances these
sexy, curly styles, using inspiration from the sea.
My idea for a new approach to colour came after I started collecting seashells.
I noticed that each shell is unique, and has different colours that change and evolve
as the shell gets thicker and thinner. The shape of a shell has a spiral connection;
it starts off wide and goes narrow. It's curly, it's colourful, and it blends from
light to dark. You can't see where the blend is happening; it's a perfect harmonious
blend.
Colouring curly hair can be a challenge. Avoiding a flat, monotone look is the key
to creating a natural look. Highlights and lowlights need to be brought out to make
the most of curly hair. For long curly hair, if the colour is too bright, the look
is very frizzy, see-through and transparent. Adding depth to the ends makes them
thicker, shinier and richer.
Each colour family has three dimensions. For instance, blond hair has ashy, gold
and yellow tones; auburn hair has copper, gold and red tones. By artfully applying
these colours in a seashell-inspired manner, curls will be even more beautiful,
unique and flattering to the wearer's face.
The right colours applied correctly can add brightness, dimension, and depth to
curly hair. Making hair look healthy and shiny with this vibrant colour can be achieved
by using weaker peroxide strength than one would when working with straight hair.
Curly hair is more porous than straight hair. You want to use colours that will
not damage the hair at a lower strength than the colours used for straight hair.

The right application methods depend on having a stylist that knows and understands
curly hair. For instance, did you know that people with curly hair usually have
more hair at the root area than at the bottom? With curly hair, if you weave a bunch
of hairs at the root area, by the end there is almost none left. The density of
the hair is different. When you are looking at curly hair, you almost always have
to look at the ends of the hair, not the root to see how many hairs there are. What
colour do you want the ends to be?
