FLARE – August 2006 BEAUTY KNOW-HOW WAVE RIDERS The weather’s hot and your flat iron is on hiatus. Carlene Higgins dares you to love the curls you’re in. Making Waves – if you’ve got any hint of a wave, get your hairstylist to snip in careful layers, like Gisele Bündchen’s, then watch your curls take form. “With one-length hair, you tend to get the pyramid shape – and that’s not attractive,” says Fritz LaBoucane, editorial director at Vidal Sassoon. But don’t let your stylist go crazy when chopping. LaBoucane prefers traditional scissors, since thinning shears don’t give a stylist enough control and razors can be damaging to your hair shaft. When styling, use a mousse for finer hair and a diffuser to develop your curls. Flip your head upside down, then push the waves upward while blow-drying. Finish with hairspray to support your newfound bouncy locks. Taming Waves – With Salma Hayek’s thick, course hair, LaBoucane imagines her primary summertime hair concern is all about control. “With humidity, [that hair texture] tends to swell and just get bigger and bigger.” That’s when it’s best to take a day off from shampooing, to allow your hair’s natural oils to improve it’s texture. On days when you do wash, don’t shy away from heavy conditioners, applied as a styler. Work it through with a large-tooth comb, then give your curls the squeeze before letting them dry naturally. This action weighs your hair down, keeping it from resembling the “big hair” movement of the ‘80s (while allowing some body at the sides instead of the top). If the look it too “wet” or flat for you, LaBoucane suggests loosening your curls at the root by gliding your fingers up from underneath – then shake. That way you’ll soften your curls without raking your fingers through your hair, which will make up the curls and leave your hair frizzy. Silicone Wars – Jonathan Torch, founder of the Jonathan Torch Curly Hair Institute in Toronto, developed a passion for transforming the manes of frustrated women who were fed up with their misbehaving curls. His number 1 niche filler? “There’s a big silicone craze in curly hair products but, after a while, it forms a coating that looks greasy and weighs your hair down too much.” Thus, his signature collection was founded, substituting pure silk protein as the star ingredient.
