Taming the Frizz
The "King of Curls" stylist and inventor of Curly Hair Solutions, Jonathan
Torch, reveals the secrets to no-frizz curly hair in this exclusive with Bless
Magazine.
Bless: You've been called the 'King of Curls' do you think it's an accurate
description for you and what you do?
J. Torch: I started my passion for curly hair 20 years ago. So far, my curl
craving is as strong as it was when i first began. Every day our team works on
many different curly hair scenarios and every curly hair scenario is a new
experience. The more we do, the better we get. I would not say that i am 'King
of Curls', but i do love what i do.
Bless: Can you explain what you mean when you say there is a "Curly Culture"?
J. Torch: People with curly hair can related very easily with the other
"curlies" out there, as their techniques have had to evolve. There has not been
enough correct information, and that's what's made styling curly hair so
difficult. When I first began working with curly hair, I had to learn from other
curlies everywhere. That prompted me to start a Curly Hair Club and helped me
research and develop Curly Hair Solutions. Now there are several curly hair
associated chat rooms. www.Frizzoff.com has become a huge influence among
curlies all over the world.
Bless: How have you managed to create a line of products that appears to work
for so many ethnically diverse clients?
J. Torch: All curly hair is affected by moisture and is prone to frizz - it's
that simple. The only things that change are the techniques and application of
the correct products that are specifically developed to solve individual curly
dilemmas.
Bless: How does your "tunnel cut" technique help the look of curly hair?
J. Torch: The Tunnel Cut is one of several cutting techniques that can
successfully redistribute excess bulk and transform curly hair into styles that
are more flattering, creating movement and softness. Cutting and styling curly
hair is the most challenging and also the most rewarding.
Bless: What prompted you to create the Frizz-off line?
J. Torch: After I mastered the Tunnel Cut, I realized that many curly heads do
not need a Tunnel cut. Success for a curly hairstyle is in the person's ability
to style their hair themselves. Once people discover how to get their hair to be
the best it can be, the learn to love and appreciate how great their hair is
--especially when there is no frizz and the length is right where it should be.
I knew i could create products that when used properly would be successful 100%
of the time.
Bless: Do you have a philosophy in the way you approach hair care?
J. Torch: I believed that i could research and assemble ingredients that are the
best for curly hair. My research proved that my philosophies were correct and
that still continues today. I am so proud of every product that i develop. Each
one is a project on its own. I have so many people to thank for all their help
over the years.
Bless: Are you working on new products for curly hair?
J. Torch: I am actually working on a new concept which is taking quite a while
to develop. I will testing this product on people with tight curls very soon.
Bless: What would you like your legacy to be? What would you like to be
remembered for?
J. Torch: I would like to be remembered for teaching curly heads all over the
world how to achieve the best curls and how easy it is to care for your curly
hair.
