Achieving Shine in the winter

Winter…is here! For some of us, this isn’t just about the arrival of sub-zero wind chills, snow, and ice. Us curlies have to deal with all that, and then some! We have to figure out what we’re doing with our hair once winter attacks. The dread sets in every year and we secretly hope the nightmare-ish season passes quickly. All the things we loved about our hair in the warmer months – the shine, moisture, volume and softness – all become some distant memory three months into a hard winter.

Here are five ways to help you maintain moisture and shine this winter to keep the winter blues away from your curls!

1. Shampoo:

Washing with a shampoo that is moisture-focused and pH-balanced is so, so critical this time of year. Indoor heating constantly sucks out moisture that our curls need, so giving moisture back to your tresses is important. We recommend Silk Shampoo, as it is loaded with pure silk amino acids and authentic silk proteins that are directly deposited into the hair follicle, leaving your hair full of moisture and looking shiny as well!

2. Deep Moisturizing Treatment:

Follow your shampoo with a deep moisturizing treatment that you can apply and leave on for the duration of your shower and then rinse out. Our favorite is Pure Silk Protein, a product that contains a high concentration of quality-grade silk proteins and amino acids. Leaving this in your hair while you finish showering lets the ingredients deeply penetrate your hair strand by strand, leaving them all nourished and moisturized. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out your hair with warm water.

3. Proper Detangling:

The detangling step is essential, but if you’re in a mood, there’s no room for “angry detangling” here! Curly hair naturally has an ‘open’ cuticle, so when your hair is adjusted by the proper pH level, the cuticle can be shut down and closed, leaving the curls shiny, and easier to comb out! Curl Keeper Slip does just that and more: it detangles after 30 seconds, locks in hair color and is a light leave-in conditioner (Whaaa?!) Make sure you start to detangle from the ends to roots; winter causes enough damage, we don’t need to inflict more!

4. Use the right styling products:

Non-heavy formulas are a must for the winter months, as we already struggle trying to get volume! Products with non-heavy formulas, ideally water-based, and products that don’t weigh the curls down should be your focus in the winter, since they will enable great styling and the ability to achieve volume and shine! Curl Keeper Original formula has the consistency of water and is pH balanced for all curl types. On how to use Curl Keeper Original properly, check out our article here.

5. Shine-enhancing finishing product:

One last final way to achieve and maintain shine is to use a finishing product that isn’t too heavy but does the job. Curl Keeper Tweek is a hairspray in a cream form, and it is ideal for smoothing flyaway hairs, fixing that gym bun dent, and making sure that your winter hat head and static goes away. Best part? It adds incredible shine to your hair! Check out this simple video that demonstrates how to use it properly to get the maximum results out of Curl Keeper Tweek.

By following these five tips you can rest easy. You will have very few “bad curl days” this upcoming winter and instead will have shiny, healthy moisturized curls that will make your dull counterparts green with envy! Happy Winter!
